Dark & Mysterious: A Series on the Occult

With what I've studied, and my proud, personal history of Weirdness, it's obvious to anyone that I have an obsession with human culture and belief. I own the holy books, and have attended worship at least once within the structure (from temple to grove of trees) of 5 of the 7 major world religions, and several others that are rarely spoken of. I had a middle school Wiccan phase that meandered itself in and out of my life since then. I have an affinity for the Occult, for the slightly odd and taboo. Or maybe, I just really enjoy offensively weird and frightful things; the profane to the traditional, the Dark Side.

Throughout ancient and modern history, humans have attributed power to the world around them through ideas, beings, gods, rituals, crafts, songs, expressions, architecture, art, and more. With belief comes the different countercultures and their mysticism as they've evolved and changed through time. Hidden knowledge and its secret keepers. Belief, meaning and symbolism embody what it means to carry around a large capacity brain that provides us with consciousness. The nature of belief is psychologically complex. The murky waters of energy, power and worship, and what those can mean to an individual is a difficult place to wade through. While a small polished gemstone may contain healing power for one person, it may just be a kitsch decoration to someone else.

The brain decides.

The brain abides.

Full Dark goes magickal and macabre as well, and that's the direction we've taken with our newest series, Dark and Mysterious: A Series on the Occult. Conjuring up the lovechild of a Ken Burns documentary and the weirder seasons of Unsolved Mysteries, we utilize both original and animated stock footage with voice-over narration to create each episode. Ryan and myself have ended up owning a variety of occult objects, antiques and ephemera over the years. As our home fills with more strange items, we thought a fun way to flex the haul would be to educate and inform with the collection. Taking a page from the Traveling Museum of the Paranormal & the Occult, we utilize informative understanding to convey the significance of each subject. The ancient origin of runes and modern runic magic, and the mysticism of the Inverted Tower of Portugal are the first two episodes of season 1.
